My Tour Diary

AN INCOMPLETE  RECOLLECTION OF THE EVENTS CONCERNING THE
CIRCULATORY SYSTEM/PIPES YOU SEE, PIPES YOU DON'T./THE INSTRUMENTS
TOUR OF THE WESTERN HALF OF THE UNITED STATES  2002

November 13 - Day 1 -  On our way to the Newport House. We spent too much time looking for something New! at the gas station mini-marts and
ended up getting to the show late. Hank Williams III was playing downstairs in the big room and stealing our draw. After the show I saw Hank and
suggested that I change my name to Hank Williams IV, and that we might do some duets, maybe even sing over some of the original Hank's hits (Kawliga/My
Buckets Got a Hole in It). at first I was asked to leave, but when I became insistent I was escorted to the parking lot by a very large man with an
eye patch and what I thought to be a very expensive European suit.

November 14 - Day 2 - My kind of town Chicago is. The show at Shuba's was a lot of fun. Blue Hawaii and the Diminisher of Bablicon came out to
catch some of the rock and roll. No anecdotes. Dinner was delicious (tuna salad and french fries).

November 15 - Day 3 - Circulatory System played at Shattered  in Columbia Mo. (no Instruments or Pipes You See, Pipes You Don't. tonight). Um I don't
remember much except that I didn't feel like lifting anything so I let Kelly, Hannah and Heather carry all the heavy stuff (bass amps etc.).

November 16 - Day 4 - Ames Iowa was the coldest day of the tour. We played with the Poison Control Center at the Octagon Arts Centre. Often the
non alcohol shows are not as much fun because you don't get the drunk guy yelling stuff or doing the funny dance. This show was an exception
The Poison Control Center do not need anything to fuel their maniacal antics and played a great show. Later they put us up at their homes and
made us loads of delicious food. Performed  Do Be Day in kitchen at 3 AM.

November 17 - Day 5 - The show at the Replay Lounge was somewhat exceptional. John got his fingers caught in the car door five separate times during
load in but played the show anyway. A trooper.

November 18 - Day 6 - The show at 15th Street Tavern was also somewhat exceptional. This was the first of three shows we would play with Need
New Body (formerly Bent Leg Fatima of Philadelphia). At sound check a confused man was blown away by Derrick checking his bass drum. He
He absolutely loved the sound of it, so much so that he tore a Need New Body poster off the wall and asked all the members of Circulatory System to
sign it. After he got the bartender to sign the poster as well he asked us if he could have the Sharpie  tm and Kelly obliged. Then, time for a delicious dinner
There was nothing open and hence nothing for me to do but get some french fries at a McDonald's (about to close), and eat them next to a newspaper
      box.

November 19 - Day 7 - You know I can't remember everything that happened this day, but it probably included at least one stop at Subway and two stops at
Taco Bell (registered trademark). I do however remember distinctly that  I was trying to nap when Derrick decided we would have a flat tire. The car lost
all control and spun around 8 or 9 times then spun around the other way 12 or 13 times and then back again 4 or 5 times. But, I must say Derrick was in
control the whole time and if not for his ability to drive a car with a flat tire that was spinning all over the place and back again and then back again,
we might not all have gotten to the Motel 6 (registered trademark) in time to catch HBO's reality show where the 45 year old Dad decides
that X is his thing and starts rolling with his high school age and younger kids, and saying things like "what's up dawg?" and hanging out in the parking lot
acting like he was fifteen and even after his kids realize how bad the stuff is for you and decide to give it up and tell him that if he doesn't give it up
that Mom is going to make sure the courts never let him see them again he still stubbornly stands by his new found " rolling " lifestyle which is where
    I fell asleep.

November 20 - Day 8 - Boise Idaho. Neurolux. I know we played with Need New Body here. I like Idaho a lot. It is a fact that at this point there was
no bartender on the tour who made drinks quite as strong as this bartender. Indeed I never thought we would encounter strong drinks like this again
on the tour.......But.           We stayed with a nice guy (I am sorry that I lost my list of names here - but those drinks, whew.) and I know there
was at least one small dog, but probably there were two. They were great dogs, real friendly. Good dogs.

November 21 - Day 9 - Portland, Oregon, Lola's Crystal Ballroom. Let's see, there's EJ's, 19 Nautical Miles, Satyricon, Barbiri's (sic), I think there's even more
that I can't remember. That's probably that Boise guy's fault. But Lola's I remember is a real class joint. Delicious food served in a Medieval setting with
Gypsy music and very candid servers. Martin and Rebecca (the Minders) came out and as usual gave us accommodations that evening. We watched
some Captain Scarlet DVD's that Martin had rented and I ate a can of whole small potatoes. The Minders have a great new place and the studio
they are building downstairs looks amazing. I will be wanting to hear some of that which they record there.
The Next morning we got up and went to a restaurant that served very large eggs.

November 22 - Day 10 - Seattle, at the Crocodile Cafe. I remember that I forgot some of the words to a new song I was singing. It was Underground.
I'd forgotten the words to this one once before and again once afterwards and boy was I embarrassed. Here I was in the home of grundge in my
flannel shirt and I was forgetting words. The food at this place is also excellent and I highly recommend that everyone eat here. The Minus Five
were excellent as well. I told their bass player Pete that I saw his other band play in New Brunswick, NJ in 1983 on the back of a truck trailer
on a Rutgers campus, I think Livingston, he remembered the day really vividly.

November 23 - Day 11 - Day Off - A drive day, there was a big fight among the band as to whether we should stop and visit the world famous
Space Needle or stop along the way to see the giant redwoods. I wanted to see the Space Needle but Kelly wanted to see the Redwoods,
Derrick started crying and then John turned up the radio really loud on some rap station, and you could tell later by the scratch marks that
Will was trying to claw his way out of the van, which made Heather upset and then Hannah swerved and hit a Toyota Corolla that was up on
jacks. Four circus clowns were trying to change a spare tire in a comical sort of way, and I couldn't really tell if they actually had a flat
or were just trying to be funny. The car careened down an embankment a good seventy five feet and burst into flames. The clowns were
all fine. We sped off and ended up not doing any sightseeing.

November 24 - Day 12 - At the Make Out Room in San Francisco. This was a fun show though Pipes didn't get to play as the venue were
confused. The Instruments only got to do a song or two at the end of the set. The drinks were as strong here as they were in Boise. We drove
over the Golden Gate Bridge but had a fight about it.

November 25 - Day 13 - At this point rations had gotten a little thin. Steve was hallucinating from the hunger and continued exposure. At times he was convinced
that he was watching Cool Hand Luke, the scene with the eggs. The patch job on the hull of our humble craft had started leaking again. I didn't know what to
do. We did nothing. Except for Steve. Barry had overcome some real personal issues and used the opportunity to discuss them in depth. I decided to sit
on the opposite side of the boat from Barry and not to speak to him for the rest of the ordeal whether we would survive or not.

November 26 - Day 14 - Los Angeles, city of Angels, sunny days and nights, good weather all year round. Movie Stars. The show at Spaceland
tonight is all good, nice people at the show, very, very nice. Harrison Ford came out to the show and played bass on a couple of songs. Good bass
player, great bass player. We talked about my plans to remake Star Wars, with myself cast in the role of Luke Skywalker. We talked about the
other ones too. Empire and Jedi. Mostly we talked about what a stinker Jedi was. Actually that's what I talked about, Harrison didn't say anything.
I think I may have hurt his feelings. He left without another word. I hope we're still going to do the movie.

November 27 - Day 15 - The drive from L.A. to Tucson is longer than we anticipated. We drove without stopping and made it to Club Congress in time
to set up in 10 minutes and play for 15. I'm glad we made it. Some cool people came to the show and stayed at the Hotel the club was in, down the hall
from us. It was a very dear time. I'll never forget it even for a minute.

November 28 - Day 16 - This was a day off to drive to Texas. I don't remember much. I think we got an Ice Cream or something.

November 29 - Day 17 - We played at a place called Rubber Gloves in Denton, Texas. I had never been to Denton before. I was pleasantly surprised.
There was a basketball hoop out back of the club. The basketball the club provided was a little deflated. I shot some hoops. I got some of them in.

November 30 - Day 18 - Austin is always a fun place to play. Tonight's show was at the Mercury Arts. A fine venue. One of the best shows of the tour. I
realized at this point that I might make it through the whole tour without being heckled. This is a shame because I had some really good comebacks
worked out in the event. Really good ones. I told some jokes at the show. Really good ones. Nobody really laughed though. Which I don't understand
because I thought they were very good jokes. The one about Tom Hanks usually has them in stitches. Just not my night I guess.

December 1 - Day 19 - The Mermaid Lounge in New Orleans has a new stage. The six of us could barely fit on it though. This is all right, I figure
it looks pretty funny at least to see a bunch of people falling over each other to switch instruments. We had time to kill the next day so we wandered
around the French Quarter for a while. I have played  New Orleans many times but we always have had to get in the van to drive a marathon the next
day. I never got to see any of it. Not this time. I could almost hear Mr. Presley himself out in the streets singing Crawfish.

December 2 - Day 20 - Martin's Lounge tonight in Jackson Mississippi. I think there were about seven people at this show. Thank God there was a
guarantee. Good food too. It was a really fun show. Sometimes those intimate settings are the best to play. I walked around near the club before the
show. It seemed like a ghost town. Really nothing happening. I hardly saw a soul. It started to freak me out so I went back inside.

December 3 - Day 21 - Hotlanta, back in Georgia and almost home. Really tired at this show but it worked out in the end. I woke up. It was good.
Got home at about 5:30 AM. After sitting in that van for three weeks it's strange to be back at home. The rats had moved back in which is what they
always do if I'm not home for a spell. I'm all for animals doing their thing, but sometimes it is simply frustrating. There wasn't even anything for them
to eat in here, believe me. There is a chicken plant nearby, and if anyone is looking for a job, they are usually hiring deboners, night shift deboners.
Probably a good job if you don't mind pulling those bones out of the dead chickens all day, every day. I guess I figured all that was done by machine
these days. I've seen it on the packaging before "mechanically separated chickens" The point being that I know that's where the fresh supply of rats
always comes from. I really dislike them and though I believe animals have there thing and all, I am committed to killing any rat that will try to live
under my house and come in for snacks in the middle of the night. I actually think they are sort of cute too, but the fact remains their turds can make you
     ill.
